This site contains all 107 of Montaigne's essays, in Charles Cotton's 1685 translation (John Florio produced the first English translation, in 1605, and several other twentieth-century translators have made their attempts at rendering Montaigne's mind in English as well). We hope that you will enjoy spending time with this quirky sixteenth-century Frenchman, that by reading his essays you will.
Years of tireless and devoted effort have gone into the preparation of this new translation of Montaigne, the first since that of Charles Cotton in 1670. Florio’s translation, which had preceded Cotton’s, was published in 1603, was reissued in 1613 and 1632, and has been reprinted a number of times within the past forty or fifty years, but always without modification of the language.
In 1572, Montaigne retired to his estates in order to devote himself to leisure, reading and reflection. There he wrote his constantly expanding 'essays', inspired by the ideas he found in books from his library and his own experience. He discusses subjects as diverse as war-horses and cannibals, poetry and politics, sex and religion, love and friendship, ecstasy and experience. Above all.

The Complete Essays of Montaigne translated by M Screech is available as a paperback, and Amazon says it is also available in the alternative Kindle format. I made the mistake of buying the Kindle verison. The Kindle version is NOT the same as the paperback Screech translation. Fortunately, I was able to cancel the order. It is misleading to indicate that the Kindle format is an alternative.
